Empowering the Indigenous People of Guatemala to Preserve Their Culture
The indigenous peoples of Guatemala have endured a long history of struggle in achieving recognition and justice. A large percentage live in poverty, while their children receive little education and often go hungry. Their very identity as a culture is threatened as tourism, new technologies, and commercialism expand the globe and seem to push them out or exploit them.
However, Mission: Guatemala, a program created by the Kateri Tekakwitha Fund, is working to change this. We work to empower the Guatemalans by showing them how their skills can provide a means to support their families. In doing so, they accomplish their goals:
Our work connects weavers and other artisans to small, local businesses who can create hand-woven pieces and other handicrafts. In turn, we market their functional art to the U.S. Through this process they are able to use their skills, learn new business skills, and earn a fair living wage.
Our Mission:Guatemala Market is just one of the ways in which we market to the U.S. As a member of the Fair Trade Federation, we ensure that each artisan or small business is paid a fair price for their work.
